Morning Devotions – From the Edges
Pastor Calvin Cook
Out of the Routine –
Scripture focus – Jeremiah 31:1 & 2
Yesterday I was in a different place than what I have become use to. I was at a meeting and spent the night in a hotel instead of traveling back home late at night in the dark and fog. I did not compromise my goals for the morning, I still spent time in prayer, scripture reading, and was able to do a devotional. If I had not admitted this to you and you were not personally informed of my physical absence, because of the hidden aspects of the digital world, you would not have known the difference for the most part.
This morning finds me back in my morning sanctuary where I feel comfortable. Back to the recliner in my quiet space, back to worship music playing, back to taking breaths and listening. This morning the words from Jeremiah 31:1-2 gives comfort to me:
“At that time, “declares the Lord. : I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they will be my people.: This is what the Lord says: “The people who survive the sword will find favor in the wilderness; I will come to give rest to Israel.”
In order to survive and be back where I think I belong, I had to survive a journey, a different setting, different people, put on my best happy face and still keep my desires to be close to God. Now my quick overnight away time was not a trip into the sins and trappings of the world but instead something that will hopefully make me stronger and better in my faith and service to Jesus. But still I was in a different setting, and I feel good to be back in the comfort of my space.
The Lord does promise that we will survive. Does promise that we will survive when we keep our hearts and minds centered on the trueness and love of God. We will “find favor in these wildernesses”, says the prophet, Jeremiah. However, again I stress the need and commitment to remain wherever you are physically, mentally, spiritually within the holy presence of God.
Today if you have wondered for an hour, a day, a week, a year, or a lifetime – God is saying come on back, with a repentant heart and you will find favor with the one who loves you and gives you life.
Seek the Lord’s blessings in all you do this day!
