Some of the most important conversations happen far from the spotlight — on front porches, around kitchen tables, in small rural churches where everybody knows your name. That’s where I live, where I minister, and where I’ve learned to follow Jesus. I’m Calvin Cook, and this is a ministry from the edges.
I grew up in a rural community outside of Dawson, Pennsylvania, in Fayette County — the kind of place where you know your neighbors and life moves at a pace that leaves room for real conversation. My faith story didn’t start in a church pew. It started at my front door, when someone took the time to knock and introduce me to Jesus. That moment changed everything. It’s why I believe so deeply in showing up for people — because someone showed up for me.
Today I serve as an ordained Elder in the Global Methodist Church, pastoring four congregations nestled in the Allegheny National Forest — Kane Community, East Kane, Mt. Jewett Light on the Hill, and Hazel Hurst. Together we are the Allegheny Ridge Covenant of Churches: a community of people who love Jesus and are willing to follow wherever the Holy Spirit leads. I also serve as Presiding Elder for the Warren Circuit, walking alongside pastors and churches in their own calling, helping them grow in mission and vision.
My wife Gail is my partner in all of it. We’ve been married for 29 years, and together we built a family retail furniture business from the ground up — literally from a storage shed — into what it is today. Life at our place also includes raising chickens, hunting for antiques and collectibles, and staying rooted in the kind of honest, unhurried living that keeps faith real. I’m also passionate about sustainability and mentoring the next generation of pastors, business people, and entrepreneurs who are just getting started.
