LENT – Day 6 – Being Lost is Not Bad

Pastor Calvin Cook

Scripture focus – Deuteronomy 8: 6-7  “Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him. 7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, that flow out of valleys and hills;

The last few days, I have sincerely found myself praying for direction. Not just direction for myself or all my concerns, desires, and goals, but for others. I have had the opportunity to have some heart-to-heart talks with people who feel lost. Some are feeling lost in grief, lost in circumstances, lost in new directions for their lives, lost in health concerns, lost in relationships. It seems as if the Holy Spirit is giving me a new understanding of what being lost is all about.

This morning my playlist went to the song by Cory Asbury “The Prodigal Song” . I don’t know if I had ever listened to or been drawn to this song, but this morning was the day. Though it speaks about the story of the prodigal son in the Bible it spoke volumes to me about being lost.  The line of the refrain “Father I’m desperate, I lost my way somehow”. Causing me to think that we can get lost in different frames of life, we can get lost in all the situations, strife, pain, etc. etc. etc.  Or we can get lost – and this is the good news – we can be lost in Jesus, lost in the presence of God.

Deuteronomy 8 speaks to me this morning that God offered the Israelites everything. Freedom, hope, a new land, all their needs supplied, food, water, the beauty of creation, everything, imagine everything that we need, provided. By the way, this wasn’t the first time that God had or still makes this offer. The condition of the covenant was that the people would have to keep the commandments, walk in His ways, and fear God. Does any of this sound familiar to us and what we should be doing if we are feeling lost. Well hopefully you know the story of the Israelites and that we don’t remain lost in all the distractions and situations that keep us from getting lost in God.

In my journal I have written these words “We have nothing, yet we have everything. The Lord is bringing you into a land of plenty. Having plenty is not bad, forgetting the Lord in that plenty is bad.”

Prayer from “the Prodigal Song” Father I’m desperate lost my way somehow, I’ll follow the truth The truth of Your love Back into the light Lead me back home. Thy will be done – Amen
