April 9 2024 – Encouragement
Scripture focus – 1 Thessalonians 5:9-11 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:9-11, Paul reminds us of God’s promise of salvation through Jesus Christ. I am reminded of the relationship between the Apostle Paul and a young follower of the way by the name of Timothy. The continual reminder of our need to encourage others. The caution is what are we encouraging others to? Are we encouraging others into the spirit of darkness or the things that bring temporal satisfaction? Or into the gift of salvation and following Jesus.
I fear the modern Church has shot themselves in the foot and needs some healing when we are trying to attract people of all ages with programs, glitz, and the everything will be OK attitude, instead of with the way of salvation and discipleship that leads into eternity.
Over the years I have watched people’s lives destroyed because they felt no encouragement into the life of authentic relationship and fellowship with the important eternal effects of discipleship and following Jesus. We encourage people in sports, we cheer from the sidelines, but how are we encouraging soldiers of the Lord on the battlefield of life. Or have we moved so far from the reality of salvation and eternity that we have moved away from God and the rest of our circle of influence in the same way we live.
We are called to encourage and to uplift one another. Paul’s relationship with Timothy exemplifies this. He mentored Timothy, reminding him of his calling despite challenges. Likewise, we’re called to speak life into others, fostering growth and resilience. In times of despair, let’s emulate Paul’s encouragement, reminding each other of God’s faithfulness. For in uplifting others, we reflect the love and grace bestowed upon us by the power of our God. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit may we encourage each other.
