From the Edges – Focusing on the Holy Spirit
Take Me Back to the Beginning –
Pastor Calvin Cook – May 13, 2024
Scripture focus – Genesis 1:1-2 1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
The song Nothing Else that was played at the end of my preaching this past week by Cody Carnes has continued to speak to my heart as I look forward to the week ahead as we prepare to worship on Pentecost and be immersed in a remembrance of the Holy Spirit.
The words in the song “I’m coming back to where we started” and “I’m coming back to what really matters” have caused me to really spend some time looking at the foundations of our faith and an understanding of the work of the Holy Spirit. I think for far too long the main line denominations have rather fallen away from this powerful work of the triune God, especially the Holy Spirt. To realize this power, look at the very first verses in the Bible.
We first come to realize that from the very beginning there was the Spirit of God or the Holy Spirit. The very reference in these first verses of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We can’t have one without the other one. I also was caught off guard to be reminded of the Genesis 1:1&2 verses notice the words: the earth was without form and void; darkness was over the face of the deep.”
Without the Holy Spirit’s presence and guidance, we to become void, living in darkness, on a journey with no direction. Just as form came to earth and sea at the hand of God, so will all of us as we accept and receive this indwelling of the Holy Spirit in our life.
I do realize it is a choice, but it begins and becomes a full commitment to the wonder working, life changing work of the Holy Spirit. With out God we become void. We become broken pieces unable to do anything that allows the fruit of the Spirit to live in us.
As we live into Pentecost may we realize this power of God available to all of us since the very beginning of time. This allows us to escape the turmoil and distractions of the world and especially of evil that continues to creep in on everything. Without the Holy Spirit hovering over all of us we remain void of all reflection on the power of God.
Pray with me – Lord, I need you, oh how I need you. Bring me back to where we started, cleanse me as I come back to what really matters. In Jesus name, Amen
Over the next several days I would love to hear your reflections of the Holy Spirit. Peace to you today in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
