Where Are You God?

Scripture focus – Psalm 139:5-7 The Voice  5 You have surrounded me on every side, behind me and before me, and You have placed Your hand gently on my shoulder. 6 It is the most amazing feeling to know how deeply You know me, inside and out; the realization of it is so great that I cannot comprehend it. 7 Can I go anywhere apart from Your Spirit? Is there anywhere I can go to escape Your watchful presence?

Loneliness is bitter and causes great emotional remorse. We often can be around many people and still feel lonely. It is as if we have lost something and don’t know where to find it again. It causes us to continue to search for the one thing that will satisfy us.  The one thing that satisfies our loneliness is often a person, maybe our spouse, a parent, or a good friend. Sometimes the one thing that we constantly desire is something that will harm us as is the case of dealing with addiction.

Instead, this morning I would ask you to leave your loneliness and think with me on three very important thoughts from our scripture focus –

Think on the words from verse 5 about being surrounded by the almighty God. That is because of the surrounding of the Holy Spirit that the love, wisdom, and peace form an impenetrable boundary. Before us, behind us, and on every side, God’s hand rests upon us. We are not adrift in the chaos of life or hanging on to the proverbial limb, we are securely held by our Creator.

Also be reminded again from the scripture this morning; The psalmist acknowledges that this knowledge is too wonderful to fully grasp. Our little human minds cannot begin to know or understand the depths of God’s omnipresence. But our hearts can!

With an understanding that the God of everything is intimate enough with us personally to surround us completely. Again, this is realized through the revealed promise that God has made in sending the Holy Spirit to us.

David asks, “Where shall I go from your Spirit?” The answer has echoed through all of history: nowhere! There is no escape from God’s presence. Whether we ascend to heaven’s heights or descend into the depths, God is there. In joy or sorrow, triumph or trial, God remains steadfast.

Here once again is the direction of choosing wisely. Choosing to remain in a state of loneliness or be comforted by the promised presence of God.
