Hearing  and Doing

Scripture focus – Hebrews 3:12-15 (ESV)

12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

We ended last week’s sermon with the thought of hearing and then doing. Or receiving and then going. This has been a common model in my thought process. The idea that we have to take what we are hearing from the Holy Spirit and turn it into a plan of action. The realness of a statement I made in Bible studies this week has been that the Holy Spirit doesn’t come upon us for our glory or power but to glorify God and God’s purpose for the world through us. This is exemplified through not only simply being hearers of the word but also doers of the word. If we are considering ourselves and our call to be the hands and feet of Jesus in this world then what are we doing with it.

I received from our scripture focus some great instruction that if we are dealing with sinfulness, and unbelieving heart, unless we are willing to take action and follow we will remain in the same place. Talk is great, planning is great, but unless we put the plan into action and follow the Holy Spirits leading, we remain in the same place.

Patrick Mayberry’s song “Holy Spirit Come” song  says these words “I’m ready to see the unthinkable, I’m ready for a new revival, I’m on the edge of a new beginning”. It causes me to think that the Holy Spirit is calling, comforting, leading, directing, and now it is up to us to receive it and not just receive it but do it!  Following the Holy Spirit to the new heights that we are destined for. Here the rest is on you- What are you going to do with it.

The closing words of the song “O Come along”  Are you ready, will you follow?
