From the Edges – Devotions for the Journey

You can only drink –

Scripture focus – John 7:37-39 (ESV) 37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as[a] the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Whenever we are preparing for surgery or medical testing, we are usually placed on some type of restriction. The restriction is usually for a period of time we are not allowed anything to eat or drink except water. Whether we like to drink water or not when we have nothing else it usually taste rather good.

It is difficult to be in this place and position when everyone is eating and drinking and experiencing all their wants and desires being met and you can have nothing. However, in this place you must learn to be satisfied with that taste and refreshment of water. In our wanting for more and we should always desire more of God, we must learn to be satisfied with what God gives and offers us. With the understanding that the main thing that is given us is hope, transformation, redemption and so much more through receiving Jesus as Savior.

Once we have received Jesus with a true commitment the baptism of the Holy Spirit is offered to us. All that we are to be or to become hinges on us receiving Jesus first and realizing what we are thirsting for. If we thirst or hunger for the things of the world and that becomes our goal, then we will continue searching for something that will not satisfy the deep hunger pains of our soul. If we do as Isaiah 12:3 suggests “with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation with joy” we will find satisfaction and completeness.

This morning if you are thirsting for more – it will only be satisfied first by Jesus and receiving Jesus as Lord and Savior of your life. Through this the way will be made. The Holy Spirit will come not for your own pleasure and purpose but to glorify God. To raise you to new places and understanding of what it is to step aside from the situations of the world into the glory of the Lord. Once there we must learn to be satisfied there and remain there.

To God be the glory, great things he has done and will do! Step up and receive the living water.
