From the Edges – Morning Devotions
What are we clinging to –

Scripture focus – Jonah 2:8 Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love.

We don’t think we have idols, but an honest review of our life we will see that there are many things we focus on that hold vain contempt to God’s steadfast love.

I recently have been sharing once again Jonah’s prayer from Jonah 2. This is being shared because in my life this has been a go to prayer in times of distress and searching in my own life. These past two weeks I have referred to this prayer often for personal self-reflection, sharing it with others going through situations, and in sermon prep. Once again, these 10 verses have become a lifeline of a prayer that can bring life changing answers.

This morning the 8th verse has spoken loudly to my life, priorities I have, and the desire I have to be completely centered on God’s love but more importantly the Holy Spirit’s working to draw me closer to the unfiltered and unadulterated love of God available to each of us.

I’d like to say I don’t have idols, but I know there are some shimmering, shiny things that continually draw my attention away from the importance of God’s love, receiving that love and sharing it with others. Here is where this 8th verse has spoken loudly and clearly. That when these things that have become idols and made a priority, I sacrifice the steadfast love of God because I have placed something about the love of God. A love of God that is available, accessible, and life changing.

Maybe it’s time we step off this treadmill we call life and truly step into the sufficiency of life. Prayerfully I ask “what are we clinging to?” “What are our golden cows?” “What do we need to let go of to experience the steadfast love of God that is available in salvation in Jesus Christ the Lord.

May the peace of Christ surround you this day.
