From the Edges – Morning Devotions
Where is God ?
Pastor Calvin Cook
Scripture focus – Acts 17:24-27 ESV 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us,
We often ask and hear the question in times of trouble, sickness, death, and despair – Where is God? We even push the negotiation with God by accounting for how good we have been. We speak about our faithfulness and ask why God has not sent a battalion of angels to spare us and save us from the enemy of despair.
In the midst of everything that is going on it becomes difficult to see God in the middle of everything. In these times when we need comfort, we feel no comfort. Why? Because we are basing God’s care by human earthly standards and not by what God has for us. We allow the distractions of the enemy to creep in and chase away all that will save us or at least bring us comfort. Remember the words from a few weeks ago “The devil will not destroy you but will distract and deceive you enough that you destroy yourself.”
One Christian writer of devotions says it this way “May I never forget that on my best day I still need God as desperately as I did on my worst day.” I am reminded that we can’t keep living in the obscure, there are some things we will have to face head on and of course trust the direction and guidance of the Holy Spirit. This is not popular in the image that has been created of the perfect world but is an essential part to experience the perfect world not made by human hands that has and is being created for us to inherit.
This morning’s play list began with Matt Maher’s song “Lord I Need You”. The opening lyrics speak to me “Lord I come, I confess bowing here, I find my rest Without You, I fall apart You’re the one that guides my heart Lord, I need You, oh, I need You Every hour, I need You My one defense, my righteousness Oh God, how I need You”
I pray this morning that in all we will encounter this day that our first focus is on the God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and that Acts 17: 24 comes alive “that they (we) should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him.”
