Seeking Jesus From the Edges-
Morning Devotions – An Uneasy Style of Faith
Prayerfully prepared by Pastor Calvin Cook – August 16, 2024
Scripture focus – Hebrews 11:6: “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”
How secure is your faith in Jesus Christ? How many distractions are you encountering on a normal day in a normal hour, maybe even every minute that separates you from a complete trust in God and what God can do. What doubt are you experiencing that is distracting you? Hebrews 11 is the big chapter on faith. It begins by reminding “that faith is the assurance of things hoped for , the conviction of things not seen.”
If our faith in Jesus is not convicting us of a better and more excellent way. 1 Corinthians 12:31 reminds us that through our faith and belief that we will receive everything we need, the gifts that Holy Spirit gives to build us up, we will be shown a more excellent way. Yet, it seems that we crave faith or show faith when everything is going our way and we are walking a flower strewn path and focusing on rainbows and sunshine. When something comes our way we begin doubt which is a tool of satan and we lean into what I describe as an uneasy faith. We are OK but not 100 percent invested in the idea that our faith will see us through. In that we place so much on the physical and not as much on hope and peace that is found in our faith in Jesus Christ.
As I thought on the words that I wrote in yesterday’s devotion I was taken back by one of the questions that I asked myself. “Why do you do what you do.?” When we have the promise that Jesus made to always be with us. Why do we choose other ways, Why do we doubt, why do we have fear about present and future, and so much more. Again I would say that this is probably not the Holy Spirit speaking, guiding, or advocating for us.
Hebrews 11 does give us some real examples of faithfulness of followers in some very extreme situations. As I read through this list of great pillars who trusted, and had faith, I was humbled to think that maybe my faith is not always in check. Hebrews 12 opens suit with the words that if we have experienced these examples, we should set aside every weight and begin having enough faith to look completely at Jesus. That in this we can not grow weary or afraid. But instead have that mustard seed size faith that will move mountains.
It can all begin with this simple prayer = Lord, remove doubt, remove fear, give me faith to trust you with all my heart. In Jesus mighty name I pray – Amen
