The Need for a Shepherd
Prepared by Pastor Calvin Cook – August 19, 2024
Scripture focus “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”* – John 10:11 (NIV)
In John 10:11, Jesus gives us one of the most comforting and powerful images of who He is: the Good Shepherd. But what does it mean to need a Shepherd? Why is this imagery so significant?
Sheep, by their very nature, are vulnerable creatures. They are easily lost, defenseless against predators, and often unable to find their way to good pasture on their own. Without a shepherd, they are in constant danger, wandering aimlessly, susceptible to attacks, and struggling to survive.
In many ways, we are like sheep. We live in a world full of distractions, dangers, and temptations. We face challenges that can lead us astray, leaving us feeling lost or overwhelmed. We may try to navigate life on our own, but deep down, we recognize our need for guidance, protection, and care.
Jesus steps into this role as our Good Shepherd. He doesn’t just watch over us from a distance; He actively seeks us out, leads us to safety, and provides for our every need. Most significantly, He lays down His life for us. The Shepherd sacrifices Himself for the sheep, showing the depth of His love and commitment.
When we acknowledge our need for a Shepherd, we open ourselves to His leading. Jesus knows the path we should take and gently guides us, even when we don’t understand the way. He is with us in the darkest valleys and on the highest mountains. His presence is our peace, and His voice is our guide.
Today, take comfort in knowing that you are not alone. You have a Shepherd who knows you by name, who loves you deeply, and who has already laid down His life for you. Trust in His guidance, lean into His care, and follow His voice. In Him, you will find rest for your soul and safety in His presence. Prayer- Lord Jesus, thank You for being my Good Shepherd. I confess my need for Your guidance and protection. Help me to follow Your voice and trust in Your care. Lead me on the path that You have prepared for me, and give me the peace that comes from knowing You are always with me. Amen
