Following Jesus from the Edges – Morning Devotions
Seeing, Following, and Holding the Light
Prayerfully prepared by Pastor Calvin Cook – 8-21-24
Scripture focus – John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people he said “ I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”
I remember well a time when there was something that needed to be done on a car engine in the darkness, that someone needed to hold a flashlight in just the right place and direction that the person working on the problem could see. Growing up we had a Plymouth Valiant as a family car. I remember it as being our families first and only new car. The car had an automatic choke, different for that day, and often the automatic choke would stick and you had to manually adjust it. This meant you would have to find the right small piece and hold it down, which required light to see. Someone had to hold the light for you, I was usually that someone.
The scripture reminds us this morning of a role and purpose as followers of Jesus. When we truly believe Jesus is the true light of the world, there are few things that need to happen: 1 – We need to recognize that light as the true light. Regardless of what is happening we keep our focus on Jesus. Amidst everything! 2 – The light of Christ is an ever-burning light from the beginning of time, there is no need for recharging, battery replacement, just focus on our part on that true light. 3- The light of Christ will supply all the light we need, no need to search for alternative lighting. 4 – If we are in the light, the light will shine on us and we will show or point others to that light. I believe that when we can come to all four of these resolutions – we will begin to see Christ as Christ is and allow him to be the light and direction we need.
I also know that flashlights have always been hard to keep track of and keep the batteries charged. We have stumbled a few times, lost the light, or chose another light source. In that we have become afraid and alone and need to seek that light once again. However, we must also be light bearers. Not of the things of the world, or quick fixes, but genuinely following Jesus and pointing others to do the same.
Lamentations 3:22-24 reminds us that even when we grow weary, that the beautiful presence of God shines through. That those who seek the Lord will be comforted by his presence every day and we experience that freshness each and every day.
I pray you experience the light of Christ and that it shines brighter than you every thought possible and that you point someone else to see it is as well.
