From the Edges – Morning Devotions

When You Feel Beat UP –

Pastor Calvin Cook – September 11, 2024

Scripture focus – Psalm 27:13-14  I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.  Wait for the Lord;  be strong and take heart  and wait for the Lord.

The first thing I would ask you to do this morning is to open your Bible and read Psalm 27.  Spend a few moments lingering in the verses and hearing from God and the comfort of God.

We all know the feeling of being beat up. Whether it is physical, emotionally, financially, socially, or in our own minds. We know it happens, but the first resolution we must come to, is that these beatings are not caused by God, they are healed by God.

It is fitting that we think on this situation that we very seldom talk about in a spiritual sense associating it with soul care. Especially on this day, when the people of the United States experience what it was to be vulnerable and attacked by terrorist. It seems as if Psalm 27 gives clarity to our response when we individually, as a family, a church, community and nation, feel attacked from every angle and by many enemies. The answer is “to trust in the Lord”.

I know how hard this is ! I know what it is to be striving to be in God’s good and perfect will but yet to be in a state of depression, exhaustion, insecurity, and all things that are running through our heart, mind and soul. But yet I know, we all should know this is not where God wants us to be. As I said in this last weeks sermon, God doesn’t cause our despair, we do. I know that I claim that, but yet the battle rages on.

Can we join in building each other up instead of tearing each other down? Can our attention be on loving Jesus just a little more than loving self? Can we not focus on the defeat but on the advancement into the place that God has created for us? Can we spend more time in a holy fellowship?

The opening words of Psalm 27 –“ The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?” could and should guide us today as our statement of faith.  I will be praying for you!
