PRAY OCTOBER
31 Days of Scripture, Reflections, and Prayers to bring us closer to the move of God in our midst.
Prepared by Pastor Calvin Cook
Day 11: Prayer for Provision
Scripture: Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.
This morning as I think about needs and provision, my mind darts and dashes to the many places where I see the need of provision being supplied. To those affected by disaster and are waiting for relief supplies in many situations’ life sustaining food, water, and shelter. I think of those lacking proper medical care. Those who are continuing to decline spiritually because of the temptations of evil and onslaught of everything not good that is going on around us. I think of the one who feels alone, where depression and anxiety have taken over, the one who is trying to make a way in life, but meeting defeat or what seems as defeat from every turn in the course. Lord hear our prayers.
As I thought on these things praying through this list and so much more, I asked the question – “Where is Jesus in all of this.” I was taken to the cross of calvary and the last words of Jesus from the cross – specifically the words – “I THIRST !” (John 19:28) These words of Jesus suddenly became clear that they were more than just a request for a drink to sooth the thirst of the day. When Jesus uttered the words “I thirst” from the cross, it was a moment of both physical and spiritual suffering. Despite His nature of being fully God, Jesus experienced the depths of human need and suffering. That brings me comfort to know that still today that in all I need for mind, body, and soul will be provided according to the will of God. That I have not been left abandoned or deserted, unless I choose that path.
Both Philippians 4:19 and Jesus’ declaration of thirst on the cross highlight the theme of need and provision. Jesus, in His moment of deepest need, trusted in the Father’s plan. Similarly, Philippians 4:10 is encouraging us to trust that God will meet our needs through His glorious riches in Christ.
May our time of prayer today bring us to the place where we know the difference between needs and wants.
Prayer: Lord, I trust that You will meet all my needs according to the riches of Your glory in Christ Jesus. Praying in the name of Jesus – Amen
