Thoughts from the Edges – Pastor Calvin Cook
How Is it WITH YOUR SOUL DEVOTIONAL
Scripture focus : Matthew 11:28-30: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
This morning, I have a blank page. Starting into a new series of devotionals and writings. What do I want to fill this white page with. There are so many directions I could go. My mind is swirling this morning with thoughts of areas in my life that need fixed. Swirling with concern for others, not for the physical needs to be met, though important, but with a renewing of mind, body, soul, and spirit.
As I shared in a recent “short” I was at the beach. I labeled it, following where I thought God was leading me to a time of new beginnings and to clear my head. In the midst of only being concerned with me, I was given an opportunity to respond to something that was life changing.
On my very first walk on the beach. I asked God, “what the heck am I doing here?” I drove 14 hours very impulsively, without a plan, without a purpose, other than to satisfy my own curiosities, all of these things so unlike me. I am a plan and purpose sort of guy. I’m not very impulsive, but there was something that called me to Myrtle Beach. What was it. On that first walk on the beach I heard the Spirit speak clearly, as I gazed out into the depths of the Atlantic ocean shimmering in the morning sun. “You are not here for you, but for me. Follow me” There are some more things I heard that at this time need to remain private, but because I was willing to listen, I heard God speak.
How Is It with Your Soul?
This question invites deep self-reflection. It asks us to pause and consider our inner spiritual state. In our busy lives, it’s easy to overlook the health of our souls, focusing instead on our physical and material needs. But scripture reminds us of the importance of tending to our inner lives.
When we ask ourselves, “How is it with your soul?” we consider our must consider our own spiritual practices, our relationship with God, and our inner peace. Are we aligning our lives with the teachings of Jesus? Are we taking time to rest in His presence and find comfort in His words?
I pray for the nation to turn back to God but it will depend on us as well who claim Jesus to turn back to God, placing our hope and trust in Him. May we find solace in His promises and strength in His presence, ensuring that our souls are well cared for and aligned with His will.
From 3 John 1:2: “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”
