And It Shall Come to Pass – Devotionals
What are You Escaping From and To –
Prepared by Pastor Calvin Cook – January 3, 2024
Genesis 19:17 (KJV)- “And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.”
In Genesis 19, we find the story of Lot’s escape from Sodom. God’s judgment was about to fall on the city due to its rampant wickedness and sinfulness. Two angels warned Lot, instructing him to take his family and flee. As Lot and his family hurriedly left, they were told not to look back, yet Lot’s wife disobeyed and turned into a pillar of salt.
Prayerfully reflect on this: What are you escaping from, and what are you escaping to? Like Lot, we may find ourselves in situations that pull us away from God’s will—whether it’s harmful habits, toxic environments, or sinful behaviors. Recognizing the need to escape these “Sodom-like” circumstances is the first step.
But escaping from something is only half the story. Lot wasn’t just fleeing destruction; he was moving toward safety and a new beginning, guided by God’s grace. When we decide to leave behind the things that hinder our spiritual growth, we must also focus on what we are moving toward—a deeper relationship with God, a life of purpose, and the fulfillment of His promises.
Lot’s story reminds us of the importance of not looking back, not longing for the past, but pressing forward to what God has in store for us. Reflect on your own life: What are the “Sodoms” you need to escape from? Where is God calling you to go? Trust in His guidance and move towards the abundant life He promises, knowing that your future in Him is filled with hope and renewal.
As you receive this revelation from the Holy Spirit this morning it will be important to act by being reminded of the things that are harming your spiritual growth and move forward to a closer and more devoted relationship to the giver of life. Pray through the situations that are holding you back or even oppressing you, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit to take you to a new and glorious life.
