RETREAT Without WITHDRAWING – Moving Forward by Returning – Part 3

Moving Forward by Returning – Part 3

Retreat Doesn’t Mean Withdrawing –

Prayerfully prepared by Pastor Calvin Cook

February 12, 2025

Good Morning, may we together just take a deep breath, quiet our lives, and sit for a few minutes just listening to the presence of God. Before anything else today, take a few minutes to be present, sitting at the feet of Jesus –

In one of my times of devotion recently, I kept hearing one word – “Advance !”  In confusion I asked I am getting mixed thoughts here. In one sense I feel the Holy Spirit saying,” rest in me, be in sabbath, breathe” and in another sense I feel the Holy Spirit saying “Advance” . My question is “what is up with that?”

The answer while listening is that there are some things that I need to withdraw from and some good things that I need to “Advance” in. That I can’t sound the retreat and withdraw from those things that are building me, holy inspired, and moving me forward in my faith growth. But the things that are distracting me or overwhelming me are the things that I need to withdraw from – this should bring me into a more holy way of living.

A scripture that comes to mind is Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV):

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Retreating doesn’t necessarily mean withdrawing. It can be a moment to rejuvenate, reflect, and re-strategize. Consider it like a deep breath, a pause to recalibrate your energy and purpose, rather than an escape from challenges. Retreating can give you the strength to continue forward with a renewed sense of clarity and determination.

Sometimes, stepping back can mean moving forward in a more thoughtful and purposeful way.

Can we move forward together with a purposeful intention of glorifying God, sharing Jesus with the world around us, and becoming Holy in our thoughts, ways and actions.

Pray for me and I’ll be praying for you –
