Scripture focus – Genesis 50:19 “But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God?”
During this series and look at the life of Joseph and applying it to our life, Genesis 50:19-20 has continued to resonate with me. An echo from the sermon of the past week and Genesis 50:19 “But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God?” continues to draw back my thoughts as I compare where I am in my life, to the life of Joseph.
This glimpse into the century long history of Joseph and the event of the day is not just about being in the right place in our relationship with God, when situations come against us that we don’t flounder or become a dire circumstance of the situation. Instead seeking out and striving to become more at peace in our relationship with God and the plan and purpose God has and is calling us to.
Is this verse about being in the right place in our relationship with God or a powerful message about trust and forgiveness. Joseph’s brothers, who had previously sold him into slavery, fear retribution now that their father Jacob has passed away. They wonder if Joseph will finally get what we would consider just revenge. However, Joseph’s response is not one of vengeance but one of grace and wisdom.
Joseph acknowledges that he is not in the place of God. By doing so, he recognizes that ultimate judgment belongs to the Lord and not to him. Joseph had endured being sold into slavery to being falsely accused and imprisoned, in a very grace filled way, remaining faithful and trusting in God’s plan.
In deep reference to this scripture, it calls us to leave behind our desire for vengeance and instead to trust in God’s justice. We are not God and will never be God! Our role is not to repay evil with evil but to show love and mercy. Just as Joseph chose forgiveness over retribution, we too should seek to forgive those who wrong us.
When we encounter situations where we feel wronged or betrayed, let’s remember Joseph’s example. He chose to see the bigger picture and trust in God’s plan. By forgiving, we release ourselves from the bondage of bitterness and allow God’s healing to flow through us.
When faced with difficult circumstances or people, may we always remember that God is in control and that our role is to love, forgive, and trust in God’s perfect plan.
