Hearing from God
Devotionals From the Edge
Pastor Calvin Cook 2-08-25
John 8:47 tells us, “Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.” These words from Jesus are a powerful reminder that hearing from God requires a relationship with Him. As believers, we should strive to deepen our connection with God to recognize His voice clearly.
After returning from a few days of vacation, I’ve felt a renewed focus on hearing from God. During our busy lives, it’s easy to become distracted and miss His gentle whispers. Our hearts and minds can become cluttered with worries, responsibilities, and even the noise of our own thoughts. We may find ourselves wondering, “Why am I not hearing from God?”
The first step to hearing from God is to examine our relationship with Him. Are we spending time in prayer, reading the Bible, and meditating on His Word? Are we genuinely seeking His presence? Sometimes, we may be hearing God’s voice, but we’re not fully attentive or receptive. We need to create spaces in our lives where we can listen without distractions.
As people we often share with others what we think is best for them. I witness this as I have heard and try to avoid saying “this is what you need to do.” But is it from God, and is it the direction God would desire us to take, will the end result bring glory to God? Or is it filling an earthly or human expectation?
Hearing from God requires availability. The Holy Spirit is always ready to guide us, but are we willing to follow His direction? We must make ourselves available for the Holy Spirit’s leading, even when it means stepping out of our comfort zones. Are we ready to act on what we hear, trusting that God knows what is best for us?
In our pursuit of hearing from God, let us cultivate a deeper relationship with Him, create intentional moments of stillness, and be open to the Holy Spirit’s guidance. God’s voice is always present; it is up to us to listen, follow, and make ourselves available for His direction.
I’m praying today for the one who needs to make decisions which will benefit and change their life into eternity. We are called to live into God’s expectations of us and no one else.
May we each find clarity and purpose in the gentle whispers of our God and Creator.
