Whispered Words of Worship – Morning thoughts from Pastor Calvin on our heart for Worship

Whispered Words of Worship
From the heart of Pastor Calvin Cook
Scripture: “Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

This past weekend, I was not in my regular places of worship. Gail and I decided to take a brief time of vacation which meant driving on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. But the desire of my heart is to constantly be drawn closer to God in worship.

Saturday, my worship comprised of the celebration of life of a dear Saint. Saturday night, I had an opportunity to quickly visit someone who I appreciate in their faith journey. Sunday morning for breakfast we were at an IHOP where I found myself being gathered in prayer around the workers and the people that I saw at the restaurant. On the road we were able to join in worship with the online church at home and be able in heart and mind to engage in the music, prayers, preaching, and fellowship of those who were gathered in the sanctuary and also online.

The conversation between Gail and I was good, and we were drawn many times into conversations that lifted my soul. Sunday afternoon we worshiped at a church plant, where the folks in worship had decided, they would be better off to worship in another place to feel close to God. And though they have experienced some struggles their faithfulness has been beneficial, not only to them, but to an entire community of faith.

All the instances I have already shared have caused me to reflect: In the noise of our daily lives, it’s easy to think worship only happens in grand moments—when the music swells in church, when we lift our hands in a crowd, or when we sing at the top of our lungs. But worship isn’t always loud. Sometimes, it’s a whisper. And worship this weekend spoke loudly through the whispers of prayers for those who are seeking more in life and to be drawn closer to God.

I love my quiet mornings, a place where I find stillness for my soul a place where I can enter into that one-on-one worship of God.
There is power in stillness, in quiet moments when we simply breathe the name of Jesus. A whispered prayer in the morning, a soft “thank You” in the middle of a stressful day, a quiet surrender when we don’t know what to do—these are acts of worship.

Elijah learned this lesson when he sought God on the mountain (1 Kings 19:11-13). He expected God in the wind, the earthquake, and the fire, but God came in a gentle whisper. Worship is not about volume; it’s about the posture of our hearts.

When we whisper words of worship, we acknowledge God’s presence in every moment. Whether we’re in a crowded room, on the shore, in our favorite comfy chair or alone in the woods, our whispered “I love You, Lord” carries just as much or more weight in heaven as a shouted hallelujah.

All of this to say – we need worship, we need fellowship not only with God but with likeminded hearts set on coming together in the sanctuary of the Lord with nothing else in mind but worship. I want to encourage you to make time for worship, not just planned but also spontaneous. It will bring healing and hope to your hurting soul.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to worship You in the quiet moments. May my heart be attuned to Your whisper and my soul find rest in Your presence. Whether in a song or a silent prayer, may my life be an offering of worship to You. Amen.
