Dragon Slayers with Faith needed! A Morning Devotional

Trusting God in the Face of Giants
Prayerfully prepared by Pastor Calvin Cook
Scripture: Numbers 13-14

I was awake in the middle of the night and could not get back to sleep. I am trying to avoid useless scrolling during sleepless times and instead rely on the presence of God who is always there. I turned to my prayer app PRAY.COM and the prayer devotional that popped up was a focus on Numbers 13 & 14.

As I listened I immediately knew this was what I needed to hear and where I needed to be – Here is a brief summary of these two powerful chapters in the middle of the books of history from the Old Testament- A reflection on the place prepared for us and where we are called to be – and whether we will follow through to overcome the giants in our life.

So here are some thoughts from Numbers 13 and 14:
When the Israelites reached the edge of the Promised Land, Moses sent twelve spies to scout it out. They returned with mixed reports, Yes! The land was fruitful, but it was also full of powerful enemies. Ten spies spread fear, saying, “We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them” (Numbers 13:33). Only Joshua and Caleb stood firm, urging the people to trust God’s promise: “If the Lord is pleased with us, He will lead us into that land… Only do not rebel against the Lord” (Numbers 14:8-9).

The Israelites listened to fear instead of faith, and as a result, they wandered the wilderness for forty years. Their story is a reminder that when we face obstacles, we have a choice: Will we focus on the giants, or will we trust the God who is bigger?

It doesn’t mean for us we ignore the giants, we just through God’s help, guidance, direction and blessing because of our faithfulness begin to take those giants out, one at a time! For more on this refers to the story of David and Goliath. As the other Giants watched David take down Goliath, they ran and revolted in fear of what could happen to them. This is called receiving the power and authority that has been given us. God calls us to step forward in faith, even when the path looks impossible. The same God who parted the Red Sea, provided manna, and led Israel by fire and cloud had already promised victory. Yet, they doubted. How often do we do the same?

What giants are you facing today? Fear? Doubt? Uncertainty? Like Joshua and Caleb, we must hold onto God’s promises rather than our own perspective. Trusting God doesn’t mean the battle is easy, but it means we’re not fighting alone. Will you see giants or will you see God’s faithfulness?

Prayer: Lord, help me to trust Your promises, even when fear rises. Strengthen my faith to follow You boldly. Amen.

AFTER NOTE – This morning’s thoughts span over a period of several hours. These are words I need to hear, and I know and prayerfully hope there is someone who reads these words who will say – These words were for me – Let us walk through these struggles together prayerfully responding that leads us to a better place.
