How Faithful are We in the Waiting – Morning Devotional From the Edges –

Remaining Faithful in Waiting

Prayerfully prepared by Pastor Calvin Cook

Scripture focus: Numbers 14:24

Continuing in the same thinking as we did yesterday and returning once again to the powerful lessons from Numbers 13 and 14, I can’t help but think that we are always waiting for something. Is what we are waiting for worth the wait? Is our inner self – aligned with the Spirit of God that resides or desires to reside within us? Are we waiting for the right thing to happen and do we even know what that right thing is? I assume it comes down to asking the question that I have been asking often – “Is this worth devoting all my time and energy to? Is their worthiness and God honoring results at the end of the process?”

When the Israelites doubted God and refused to enter the Promised Land, they faced the consequence of wandering in the wilderness for forty years. Yet, in the midst of their rebellion, one man stood out—Caleb. God said of him, “But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it” (Numbers 14:24).

Caleb remained faithful while an entire generation perished in the wilderness. For forty years, he held onto God’s promise, even when others gave up. He didn’t let the delay discourage him. He didn’t allow bitterness to take root. He stayed faithful, trusting that God would fulfill what He had spoken.

Remaining faithful isn’t just about standing strong in the good times; it’s about trusting God in the waiting, in the disappointments, and in the detours. When prayers seem unanswered and promises feel distant, will you keep walking in faith? We are quitters by nature, deserters of justness, and feel that many things that will result in victory are not worth the struggle and battle that it takes to get to the place that God is calling us to. Realization number 1 has to be that God will supply what we need, but we must remain in God’s perfect will.

Faithfulness isn’t about understanding every step—it’s about trusting the One who leads. Caleb’s story reminds us that God sees our faithfulness, even when it feels unnoticed. And in His perfect timing, He rewards those who remain steadfast.

One final thought – In this story of Caleb, and even in reviewing the life of Joseph. Neither in the situation or season of their life became complacent. They continued in their faithfulness – to follow and trust in God and remain faithful. They went through, with tenacity, the struggles all the while not being consumed by the struggles. We need to do the same ! Yes our God is a wonder working God. But we need to realize that work is through us and there is no room for complacency.

Prayer: Lord, help me to remain faithful even when the journey is long. Strengthen my heart to trust You, to walk in obedience, and to wait with hope. Amen.
