Key Verse: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” (Isaiah 43:1)

In a recent conversation, the question of doubting if we are in the right place with God came up. We constantly have these questions: Do I really love and know God? Am I secure in my salvation? Am I experiencing all that God really wants of me and has planned for my life? How can I trust God more? And the biggie “Am I going to heaven when I die?”

This brings us to the topic of assurance. A simple definition is knowing that you know that you know without doubt where you are not only in your relationship with God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit but you are allowing this knowledge to change you and draw you closer always to God.

In what I read in scripture especially in these verses of Isaiah 43, bearing in mind that we are only through the first 4 verses at this point in our devotional and Lenten journey is that God is not the doubter in this two-way relationship! God has redeemed us, knows us personally, loves us, cares for us, is present always, and will always make a way. These claims are backed up by scripture but should be also echoed in hearing from the Holy Spirit speaking directly into our hearts.

If there is any doubt it is on our part. If there be any fracture in our relationship with God, it is on our part. We need to avoid being doubters or even struggling with what God is desiring to do in each of our lives and allow it to happen. I believe the Apostle Paul further confirms this as he speaks to this in Romans 8:38-39 “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Are we able to live in to these words of scripture and this claim that we will not allow anything to separate us from God. This is living into assurance. Again, remembering that we are the one that causes the fractures in our relationship with God through our very human minds who can’t see the greater purpose and plan for our life or even begin to understand the love that God has for us and what is expected in return.

The assurance of redemption through Jesus secures our place. God’s love is unchanging and His promises sure. As we prepare for Easter, let this truth anchor you: you belong to God, and nothing can separate you from His love (Romans 8:38-39).

Reflection: How does your identity as someone redeemed by Jesus shape your hope and faith during Lent? Spend time rejoicing in this secure relationship.
