Running to the Resurrection
Pastor Calvin Cook
Scripture: John 20:3-8 (NIV)
“So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first… He saw the strips of linen lying there… Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.”
It was early—before the sun had fully risen. Mary Magdalene had come to the tomb and found the stone rolled away. In a panic, she ran to Peter and John. “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,” she said, “and we don’t know where they have put him!”
Peter and John didn’t wait. They ran. Hearts pounding. Minds racing. Could it be true? Could it really be over? Or—could something else be happening?
John outran Peter and arrived first, but he hesitated. Peter arrived second, but rushed in. There were linen cloths. No body. No guards. No explanation.
Then John stepped inside. He saw and believed.
That moment changed everything. Not because they fully understood what had happened, but because they encountered the empty tomb—and hope began to rise.
Today, as the sun rises and Easter breaks through the shadows of night, we are invited to run to the tomb ourselves. To see for ourselves that it is empty. To remember: death did not win. Jesus is alive.
• Are you running toward Jesus today—or holding back at the door?
• Like John, you may not have all the answers, but will you believe?
• What in your life has felt like a sealed tomb? This morning, trust that the stone has been rolled away.
Prayer: Risen Lord, This morning, I run to You. Let me see the empty tomb with fresh eyes and renewed hope. Awaken my heart to the truth of Your resurrection. You are alive, and because of that, I can live with purpose, peace, and power. Thank You for defeating death and inviting me into life. Amen.
He is not here—He is risen, just as He said.
Run to the tomb. See. Believe. Rejoice.
Happy Easter.
