THE AWESOMENESS OF GOD – Realizing it From the Edges.

THE AWESOMENESS OF GOD –

Pastor Calvin Cook – May 23, 2025

Scripture focus – Matthew 28:16-17 “Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw Him, they worshiped Him. But some doubted.

This morning the hymn “How Great Thou Art” is playing on repeat in my mind, especially the first verse: “O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder. Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made. I see the stars; I hear the rolling thunder. Thy power throughout the universe displayed”.

Asking the question – “Are we in the kind of relationship, with God, (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) that causes us to pause and think of the awesomeness of God, before anything else. Is our relationship with God, one that only seeks answers and direction for ourselves, rather than who God is, God’s awesomeness and power, and the practice of heartfelt worship.

This morning’s scripture from Matthew is a very consolidated view of Jesus’s post resurrection appearances. Actually, it could be considered in Matthew 28:16-20 a powerful punch to who we are in God, who we are called to be, what we are invested with, and then the direction to go. All of this is causing me to pause and say WOW!

Pausing me to say what Thomas said to Jesus in John 20:28 after doubting, would come face to face with Jesus and say, “My Lord, and My God.” All of us should be at the place where we acknowledge the presence of God, the showing up of Jesus to offer us salvation, the powerful leading of the Holy Spirit – that every breath should be breathing in and out the presence and awesomeness of God.

As we close this morning, going back to How Great Thou Art and asking the question: “What are you in wonder of? What are you awestruck by? What are you being drawn to? Certainly, there will be doubts! Certainly, just as the disciples experienced the presence of Jesus some doubted – thinking there were still the negative doubting attitudes in the crowd that had gathered. But anyhow as they experienced the awesomeness of God – they also heard – “GO” – not on their own accord but on the direction of Jesus in the name of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

When does doubt, insecurity, and confusion leave? When we live in awe of the one and only GOD.
