Some Thoughts on Standing on Holy Ground. Is it time yet?

Some Thoughts on Standing on Holy Ground

July 1, 2025

“Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Exodus 3:5 (NIV)

Trying to be in the right place all the time is tough. Even tougher is discerning “is the place where I am at the right place and a good place?”

In the recent days the thoughts of being centered on Holiness and being on Holy Ground has been speaking to me. Asking questions like “Will I be found faithful?” “Am I doing what God is calling me to?” “Do I even know what being in God’s perfect will is all about?” Do you have these same questions?

Recently my friend and colleague Rev Dr Mark Hecht was sharing a devotional about the Moses encounter of the burning bush. It caused me to ask the question what the burning bush(s) in my life is and am I even recognizing them.

When Moses stood before the burning bush, the place was transformed from an ordinary patch in the desert into a holy place because God’s presence was there. The bush wasn’t perfect on it’s own is was because God’s presence was there. Everything was suddenly transformed because God’s presence was realized.

I think that sometimes we must get everything perfect and have it all together before we can enter in God’s presence. Maybe this is why some only believe God can be experienced in a church, after all we have been taught this is God’s house.

Can we think in a different way? That we recognize holy ground because of God’s presence and that should be every where if God is everywhere. Would our lives be different if we were constantly recognizing God’s presence? Would we then be understanding holiness a bit better? Would we be walking barefoot all the time because of standing on Holy Ground.

Standing on holy ground is an invitation to slow down, to listen, and to take off whatever “sandals” we’ve been waling in: our plans, worries, busyness, and distractions. We can encounter God right in the middle of the ordinary! And this awareness is not for our own satisfaction; it is God calling us to something deeper with God at the center.

Holiness or being on Holy Ground is not just a place; it is a action, response, and a heart changed because we have been cut to the heart by God.  Wherever God is, there is holy ground – and today, that means right where you are.

What is your prayer of confession today to bring you closer to God?

Thanks for reading – praying you encounter God everywhere today !
