Some Thoughts on Freedom
Pastor Calvin Cook
July 4, 2025
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1
As we celebrate Independence Day, we pause to thank God for the freedoms we enjoy in this country—freedom to worship, to gather, to speak, and to live in relative peace. These freedoms were won through sacrifice and commitment by those who came before us, and it is right for us to be grateful.
But as followers of Jesus, we also remember that freedom is found not in anything earthly, but in Christ alone. While earthly freedoms can be taken away, the freedom Jesus gives is eternal, rooted in His love, forgiveness, and the power of the Holy Spirit.
Freedom in Christ means:
• We are free from the guilt of sin, for Jesus has paid the price. (Romans 8:1-2)
• We are free to live a new life, empowered by the Spirit to walk in love and holiness. (2 Corinthians 3:17)
• We are free to serve others, using our freedom to care for those in need rather than only ourselves. (Galatians 5:13)
On this 4th of July, let us give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy in our country, but let us also reflect on the greater freedom Jesus offers—a freedom that transforms us from the inside out. As we watch the fireworks or have a picnic with family and friends, may we remember the ultimate freedom we have in Christ and commit ourselves anew to walking in His truth and love.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for the freedom we have in this country and for those who sacrificed for it. Thank you most of all for the freedom you give through Jesus Christ. Help us to stand firm in that freedom, to live for you, and to serve others in love. Amen.
