Some Thoughts on Hearing from God

Scripture focus : “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Yesterday I heard from a dear sweet sister in the Lord. This sister has been a very important part of my journey in faith, because as her friend and Pastor, we through the years have had some deep conversations about faith especially during times of trial, sickness, loss, joy, celebrations, and many times starting over even from the ashes of life.
In the message yesterday she asked a question about hearing from God. Though some consider me weird, I firmly believe that we hear from God. If God has called us beloved, would God not want to speak words of hope into our lives, especially when we are feeling beat down by the world and all the things we encounter through out the day.
As I thought about the conversation through the afternoon and into the evening, I found myself praying the words of a song off my daily play list “Give Me Faith”. The prayer being “Give me Faith to trust what you say”.
How does our faith and trust grow? Not only by hearing, but by taking to heart, in a life that is loud with distraction, discouragement, or doubt, what God is speaking into our lives. As well as by the way God is using to speak these words. Romans 10:17 gives us the answer in a simple but profound truth: faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.
Many are longing to hear from God—seeking direction, encouragement, or confirmation. And while we often look for signs, dreams, or feelings, the primary way God speaks is through His Word. It is in the written word (the Bible) we find the heart of God, the story of redemption, and the invitation to trust Him more deeply.
There is just a bit more to consider – It is not just hearing but receiving. It is not just saying thank you for speaking this truth to me but then taking to heart what has been spoken into your life. As I shared with my friend yesterday and share often with others – when God speaks into your heart it can be confirmed in scripture. The importance of being in the word regularly.
What ever it is you are looking for today, whatever expectations you have, what ever distractions you encounter, through the moving of the Holy Spirit – God will meet you right where you are, give you guidance, and bring you to the place and space that you need.
Hearing and listening brings you to Faith in God which brings you to trusting in God.
Prayer: Lord, help me to hear You clearly. Tune my heart to hear Your voice. Let Your Word come alive in me so that my faith grows stronger with every verse I read and every truth I receive. Open my ears and my heart, so I won’t just hear—but I will follow. Amen.
