Daily Rhythms – Finishing Well

Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

I concluded our last evening’s Tuesday night prayer service with Ephesians 3:20-21. After arriving home, I began the wind down of another day. But the words from the Apostle Paul’s letters to the followers of Jesus in Ephesus kept re-circulating in my heart. I was reminded of a podcast I had heard earlier in the week where Bishop Mark Webb was being interviewed. Bishop Webb sited his daily practice with his normal spiritual discipline at the end of the day of reading from John 12.

I begin to think that in writing these devotionals it might appear that all my thoughts and ideas are centered just on the morning. I know I have referred to these times as my sanctuary or quiet place to meet with God. But…. What about the rest of the day? Believing that we must be in full connection, our times of sanctuary or being connected with God can not just happen in the moments of a new day but take place through out the day. Just like Sunday morning worship should not be the only time we worship God or spend time with God. However, to do this we must establish a certain rhythm and discipline in our daily life. Here I confess that some days I am there and other days not so much.

So as the day drew to a close I very intentionally was drawn back to the words of Ephesians 3:20-21 asking some very key questions of myself in quietness of my preparation for rest and sleep:

Did I recognize everything that God did in my life today?

Do I realize that without God I am nothing?

Have I limited God to my own understanding and not surrendered to God’s good and perfect will for my life?

Am I realizing God’s power or only relying on God when I’m in a jam or need God?

Am I living out what God wants to do in me and through me?

There were many other questions that led to a complete surrender, finding comfort for the portions of the day, that I messed up. When things were said that were not of God, ideas or distractions that drew me away from keeping my eyes, heart, mind and soul focused on Jesus.

Yesterday was one of the easier days as it was a set-apart day. A day I spend with a covenant group of Pastors. Yesterday for four hours we focused on Holy Communion, we were in Covenant relationship and communication, and it was good. Last evening we spent time as a church in prayer for our communities and churches and specific needs. It was good to be in that presence.

But what about the day before me – can I keep centered, can you?

Keeping centered on all who God is and wants to do in and through you. We can with a everything centered on Jesus!

The prayer is when we come to the end of the day – will we hear –“Well done good and faithful” or will we hear – “We have some things to work on and confess.” God will guide your paths but please find, search if you have to, fight for it if you have to, examine every thought, motive, and situation that will move you into a place of peace, hope, joy, and love for God, for yourselves, and for others.
