Where Would I Be If I Wasn’t Where I Am
From Prayer and Reflection by Pastor Calvin Cook

The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me; Your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.” Psalm 138:8
Have you ever looked around at where you are in life and wondered, “How did I end up here?” Maybe the life you have lived and path you’ve taken hasn’t looked anything like what you expected, much less planned. Maybe you’ve endured disappointment, loss, or times when God seems silent. Yet when you pause and reflect, you begin to see that God’s fingerprints are all over your life — even the hard parts.
Sometimes, God’s call isn’t exactly clear, but by remaining faithful with a Holy Spirit led discipline it becomes clearer through our faithfulness. We often see God’s will lived out through the rearview mirror instead of the windshield. Realizing that some of the setbacks were a set up for something much greater. This might be the job that didn’t work out, the relationship that ended, the dream that seemed delayed — each moment became a tool God used to place you exactly where you need to be to glorify Him.
These thoughts bring me to the life of Abraham from Genesis. Hebrews 11:8 shares: “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.” —
When we look at the life of Abraham, we see a man who dared to trust God’s direction when everything familiar had to be left behind. God’s call to Abraham was not a just direction it was about relationship: “Go… to the land I will show you.” (Genesis 12:1)
Abraham didn’t know the destination, but he knew the voice. He walked forward with nothing but faith — trusting that God was not just leading him to a place but forming him along the way. Every detour, delay, and disappointment became a part of who he was and how he remained in God’s will.
Moses found his calling not in Pharaoh’s palace but in roaming around in the wilderness. David learned to trust God’s timing not on the throne, but in the caves of hiding, even in his own sinfulness.
I’ve recently endured through some seasons of disappointment, whether it has been caused by a person or situation it has caused me to be reminded that whatever it is I am going through that God is there. That for this season God has me where I am supposed to be. Once again in the rear mirror I am seeing that each disappointment has strengthened me to persevere, to experience and know what redemption is all about and each has been positioned for purpose by a God who sees the end from the beginning.
When we trust that God is both the Author and the Finisher of our faith, we begin to view our circumstances through the lens of a God purpose rather than personal failure. The question shifts from “Why am I here?” to “Lord, what are You forming in me here?”
Where would I be if I wasn’t where I am?
I might have missed the growth that comes from waiting.
I might have missed the people God sent for this season.
I might have missed the deeper dependence that only comes when there’s nowhere else to turn but to Him.
In God’s will you are where you are on purpose — and for a purpose.
God has not abandoned you in this place; He has appointed you for it.
Live into God’s abundant and amazing grace – it will change you !
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28
