We Never Know What We Can Do – Until We Do It.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 (NKJV)
My thoughts are circling in many different ways this morning. I’m thinking about the things that are important to both my soul and the way I live my life for others to see. My heart, mind, and soul are constantly geared towards vision. The vision that I believe are God visions, I know they are God sized visions because they are too small for me to think or comprehend. While I think on vision – I embrace spiritual discernment. Discerning between what God desires, and the worldly desires that we all have. Discerning the difference is sometimes difficult. Recently the affirmation that Holy Spirit inspired vision can be confirmed by scripture, the voice of knowledge, and shear determination to not allow anything to stop you.
As my thoughts circled this morning, King David as a boy came to mind. How out of all the people that could have been chosen, and even those who tried to be chosen, this little shepherd boy was the one God chose.
David did something that no one ever thought was possible. He stepped onto the battle field against a giant, that was much bigger, stronger, and bolder. The giant was skilled on the battle field and caused great fear when he showed up. Yet, David equipped and powered by God did what no one thought possible. David did the impossible, just by being willing to do it.
There are certainly times in our lives where God has and is calling us to step into something new, something unfamiliar, uncertain, or beyond our comfort zone. And often, our first reaction is doubt: “I can’t do this”, “I’m not ready”, “I’m not capable”, “I’m to young”, “I’m to old”, “I don’t have the education”, “I don’t have the funding”, “I don’t have the support”, “I don’t want to do this” and so many more. I share these because at one time or another, these have been my own excuses.
But the truth is this: we never fully know what God can do through us until we step forward in obedience. Until we allow faith and trust to become the substance of everything. David didn’t know he could defeat the giant. The odds were stacked against him. I believe the onlookers came to see a massacre. But instead, they say a powerful God victory lived out in David’s life.
The early church faced incredible difficulty from the community around them including some being martyred. Yet through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, the church carried the Gospel to the entire world and still does.
These instances of being faithful to the call does something powerful or should help us to realize: obedience releases ability. Faith activates strength and perseverance. Stepping forward invites the Holy Spirit’s guidance. The strength was never their own it was God through the Holy Spirit.
I have hundreds of references looking back even into the recent times that God did the impossible. Many times, we go into the game with excuses as our game plan. But hear me as I say this – if God is placing something before you today, it might seem hard regardless if it is something in ministry, leadership, even forgiveness, a new season of life, a hard conversation, a new calling, struggling through life while trying to keep from drowning, it all begins with faith. Faith must come first ! Faith in the saving power of Jesus Christ through the forgiveness of sins. Faith in God the Father. Faith in the move of the Holy Spirit.
You will never know what God can do through you, until you are willing to step out and up to God’s plan for your life.
