GOD’S WAY –
In the Calm of the Storm –

Psalm 107:28-30 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. 29 He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. 30 Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven.
We were warned for days that this latest winter storm was coming. That the storm would bring heavy amounts of snow, cold temperatures, ice, sleet, and winds. For the benefit of the weather men everything that they said would happen happened.
We live in a life that is full of unexpected turns. Of things that we cannot control and the one factor we fail to see or even acknowledge is that God is there. When we cannot experience all that God wants to do that is when the suffering and pain overtakes our life and changes our opinion of God and at times even if there is a God.
A few weeks ago, as I was researching for a sermon and these devotionals I was drawn to Psalm 107. This is a very famous chapter because of the opening verse “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; His love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1 (NIV). Pause here, are we giving thanks this morning because the storm is over or almost over or are we already lamenting about the cleanup, the frigid temps, all that we have to do to once again try to get back to normal.
Here is what has humbled me through this storm, it was a simple prayer request. A request to pray for people in places who don’t normally experience severe winter weather. This storm is a historic storm touching areas not normally affected by winter. I thought about this request. I thought about that this morning as I read Psalm 107. Beginning at verse 23 those who are accustomed to being on the sea, knowing the works of the Lord and of his wonderful deeds, they had highs and lows, but as they cried to the Lord – they were brought out of their trouble. What about those who have not heard about Jesus because no one has told them.
Here is my reflection, most of us who have lived all of our lives through winter storms, don’t like it, but we know it will happen because of our geographical choices. But ….. those who don’t are really under duress because they are not use to what is happening.
This speaks of our lives and our souls and what we will choose to focus on. How we will choose to live our lives. The decisions we will make. Will we clean up and return to our old ways of sinfulness, strife and living in storms or will we move into the place that God is calling us to be. All the while praying for transformation of our lives and the lives of others.
Psalm 107 ends with these words : “Whoever is wise, let him heed these things and consider the great love of the Lord.” (verse 43)
