Waiting is Hard – Lenten Devotional By Us for Us.

Today’s devotional prepared by Virginia Wells is one that leads us to consider whether we are waiting on God to work the way we desire or if God has already actually already done something amazing that we haven’t recognized.

The Waiting

Read: Genesis 24:1-27

Abraham’s relationship with God was very strong based on his knowledge and experience of God, verses 1 and 7 show us this. He knew God would provide the deep desire of his heart, for his son to have a wife from his country, “my own relatives”. He was so sure of this that he had his chief servant make a sacred vow to go there and retrieve her. The servant reflects how we respond to God many times. What if….?

Abraham is so sure that he tells the servant, God ”is already sending His angel ahead of you”. How many times have we experienced God setting things in place way before we even had any idea? I smiled when I read that God provided Rebekah before the servant was done praying. God is so good like that!

Notice the servant doesn’t say anything about his mission right away, he watches, pays attention to make sure this was who the angel sent. Many times I have rushed in, going on my own assumptions instead of letting God reveal His plan. After he sees that Rebecca is indeed the one, the servant then bows down and worships the Lord! Do we worship Him or do we just assume it’s our right as His child to have Him give us things?

We are all in different stages of our relationship with God. We have experienced God in different ways. This we know, the strength of our relationship is based on our investment: reading the Bible, prayer, quiet time in His presence, community with believers, paying attention to where God is working and joining in, even looking back and realizing where God was active in our life. God is love, has grace beyond what we deserve, and desires relationship with us. He loves to give us good things!

Prayer: from Psalms 100:4-5

I will enter Your courts with thanksgiving and Your courts with praise; give thanks to You and praise Your name. For You are good and Your love endures forever; Your faithfulness endures through all generations. AMEN
