Seeing Through Blindness – Can we see Jesus in the midst of everything?

Today’s devotional has been prepared by Jeff Wolfe. Jeff is chairperson of the ARCC Allegheny Ridge Covenant of Churches Council. Through Jeff’s leadership we are collaborating and journeying through unchartered waters as the four churches – Kane Community, East Kane, Mt Jewett – Light on the Hill, and Hazel Hurst seek to be the extension of Jesus to our communities and beyond. Jeff’s devotional writing today inspires us to see what we are called as followers of Jesus to see.

Seeing Through Blindness

Matthew 9:27-34

In Matthew 9:27–34, two blind men beg Jesus to heal them.

Their call for mercy was not just an acknowledgment of their physical blindness but a cry for spiritual sight and understanding. Consider the persistence of the blind men. They followed Jesus, calling out for mercy even when the crowd might have thought them insignificant or unworthy. Their determination serves as a model for us in our own spiritual journeys. How often do we seek the Lord with such fervor? How often do we call out for mercy in the midst of our struggles, not allowing discouragement to silence our voices? Faith requires action. The blind men did not wait for Jesus to come to them; they actively pursued Him, demonstrating a deep desire for healing.

In our lives, we must also take steps towards Jesus. Whether it be through prayer, worship, or acts of service, we are invited to approach Him with the same zeal. Are we willing to step out of our comfort zones and follow Him, even when the path is unclear?

Notice Jesus’ question: “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” Jesus wanted to know if they had faith in His ability to heal. Their response, “Yes, Lord,” is a declaration of trust that opened the door for their miracle. In our own lives, we must ask ourselves whether we truly believe that God can intervene in our situations. Do we trust in His power to heal our hearts, mend our relationships, and guide us through life’s challenges? Are we inviting others to experience the same love that we have encountered?

Let us remember that Jesus is always ready to respond to our cries for mercy. He desires to open our eyes to His truth, to heal our wounds, and to fill our hearts with His love. Let us be like those blind men, boldly calling out to Him, believing in His power, and sharing the good news of His grace with the world!
