The Faith Community

Prepared by Renee Mika

Philippians 1: 3-11
When Paul writes to the church in Philippi, he writes with gratitude. He thanks God for them – not for their perfection, but for their partnership in grace. Even from prison, Paul’s heart is full because he knows faith is something God forms within a community.

As we travel through this Lent season, we are reminded that none of us walk this
journey alone. God has woven our stories together. We share in one another’s joys, struggles, questions, and hopes. This reminds me of the time my dad collapsed in church. The entire congregation gathered around the alter rail in prayer and communion.

That day I realized we were all scared, worried and praying together as
one church body. That day I realized more than I ever had before that this church is a church FAMILY.

Paul offers a promise we need to hear: “He who began a good work among you will bring it to completion.” As a church family, we may see areas where we long for growth deeper unity, stronger faith, clearer love. Lent invites us not to be discouraged by what is unfinished, but to trust the faithfulness of the One who continues to shape us.

Paul prays that love would abound – not just in emotion, but in wisdom and
discernment. This is love that listens well, chooses carefully, and seeks what truly
matters. During Lent, God invites us to examine what fills our lives and our church, letting go of what distracts us so we can hold fast to what leads to righteousness and life in Christ.

Our hope is not in our own efforts, but in God’s steady work among us – forming us into a people sincere in faith, rooted in love, and filled with the fruit of righteousness, all for the glory and praise of God.

Dear God, we thank You for calling us together as Your people. Thank You for the work You have begun among us and for Your promise to carry it to completion. Grow our love in truth and understanding. Teach us to discern what is excellent and to walk together with sincere hearts. As we journey through Lent, shape us into a community that reflects Your grace, bears good fruit and lives for Your glory. Amen.
