Maundy Thursday Devotional
by Pastor Micah Reese
Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Today is Maundy Thursday, a day when we remember the last supper Jesus had with His disciples. Even though Jesus knew He was about to die, His focus wasn’t on Himself. Instead, Jesus was focused on how this supper points to His true purpose on earth: fixing our broken relationship with God & giving us a new identity. In 1 Corinthians 11, Paul reminds us while this supper is a historical event, it is also an event we participate in through taking communion.
When I was in seminary, the meaning of communion really hit me in a new way. You see, the church I attended took communion every week. This seemed strange to me as I was not used to taking communion that often. In fact, I thought that taking communion each week would take away from its significance. To my surprise, I found out the opposite was true. I would look
forward to weekly communion because it became a place where I met God and was reminded, I am no longer defined by my past sins and mistakes but rather by the new identity that comes through Jesus Christ. These truths helped to root me in Jesus, allowing me to better deal with whatever came my way that week.
On this Maundy Thursday, let us take time to remember the change that Christ brought, a change that is proclaimed every time we take communion.
Prayer:
Dear God, thank You for communion and the reminder that Jesus has overcome the world. Help me to remember and experience Your forgiveness today, letting go of anything else that tries to claim my identity. In Jesus name, Amen.
