What Did Jesus Do For Me? Devotionals From the Edges

What Did Jesus Do For Me ?

Following Jesus From the Edges

The last couple of mornings we have been reflecting upon the days following the Resurrection of Jesus. I hope we have prayerfully considered what has taken place as recorded in John 20.

We have hopefully stepped into the place of the early followers of Jesus and experienced in some way what they experienced: Mary arriving at the tomb only to find it empty. Peter and John running to the tomb to find the grave clothes in an empty tomb. The Disciples return to the comfort of what they knew best.  The appearance of Jesus to Mary and Mary not recognizing Him. Jesus going behind locked doors to bring Peace into this chaotic, mournful, situation. Thomas doubting until Jesus shows up and brings him assurance.

Certainly, these events and situations cause us to consider what Jesus did in those post hours of the resurrection, but do we consider what Jesus has done for us and all of the people who has stood at the edges of life are standing there today and will also encounter that same question until Jesus returns. What has, is doing and will do for me.

One of the vivid reminders of a heart devoted to Jesus was in a pre-Easter visit with one of older sisters in the Lord. After receiving communion, she broke into tears and stated her remorse and confession of how she was sorrowful that Jesus would take all of the pain and die on the cross for her.  That time has caused me to consider vividly with respect the answer to the question I pose this morning: “What has Jesus done for me and you?”

As I seek that answer – I am reminded of the prophecy of Isaiah proclaimed some 750 years before the crucifixion and is still a stark reminder of God’s great love for His people absorbed and made real in these words.

“ But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opens not his mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.” Isaiah 53:5-8 (KJV)

So, when evil speaks into our very being and plants seeds of doubt. When our life becomes so self-centered that we think we can fix anything broken. When we place all our confidence to the powers and authorities that will ultimately destroy us. And then we are so haughty and proud to stand in our own court of decision making our resolutions.  Even on days when we feel defeated and without shame ask the question “What did or is God doing for me? Pause, take a deep breath and be brought back to the reality of Jesus coming to this earth to save his people from sin, death, and eternal corruption. Be ashamed, seek forgiveness, find atonement for your sins and experience redemption. That is what will answer the question “What Did Jesus Do for Me?”
