The Good Promise Renewed –
If you know Gail and I well, you know we have these two Manx cats, Mabel and Sylvia that occupy a lot of our attention. Even though they don’t ask for our attention when they are in “missing mode” we seek to find them, wherever they might have chosen to take one of their 20-hour naps. They seem to find a new favorite place every day. Gail and I also have this un-written promise as cat servants, to always know where they are and to never leave the apartment or go to bed, or into our schedule without knowing where they are at. Usually, they check in but sometimes in their catlike stealth mode the search is difficult.
This morning my mind has wondered off in these thoughts and I have asked myself the question – “Is this the same kind of relationship that I have with God?” I wonder off to do my own people thing without any regard for God’s presence. That God is always desiring to find me and to be with me.
In Jereimah 29:10 we read “This is what the Lord says: “…………………..I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place.”
This morning, I am waiting, wanting, longing, to experience that renewed covenant that God has made with me with this generation. But wait, wait just one minute! To experience this, it is up to us, it is up to our decision to return to God. To return with all our heart, mind, soul, our everything. So why are we sleeping, or hiding, or running when God is desiring to be with us, to be our God, and for us to be God’s people.
Maybe it’s because there is a little cat in all of us, maybe because we are trying to hold God in captivity to get God to do what we want instead of allowing God to be God. Instead of allowing Jesus and his death and resurrection to transform us, allowing the Holy Spirit to move us to the place where we belong. Back into the presence and heart of God, a place where everything else will cease and the fullness of God will be revealed. I’m longing for that day!
