Following Jesus From the Edges – Morning Devotions

Scripture focus – Colossians 3:17: “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Every day there are struggles, distractions, situations which consume us and gnaw at us. The pressure builds up to the place where sometimes it feels like we are going to burst. It happens often especially if you are life me and hold more in than you let out.

This last week, the practice of evaluating my words, my actions, my responses as being what God would want me to do rather than what I would want to do has certainly brought me through some tough decisions. What has stuck me is that when I am not living out this practice of being fully dependent upon the will of God, that I am not living out my faith.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and forget to include God in our daily routines. Regardless of what today is for you as a student, a professional, a retiree, or a stay-at-home parent, this verse reminds us to integrate our faith into every aspect of our lives. If I might add that is what followers of Jesus should be doing, how they should be living.

Here are some ways I think will help us to live happier and more holy lives:
1. In prayer, starting each day or each hour or through each situation through prayer seeking and listening for God’s guidance. This morning I am praying for my day and week because it is packed full. There will be some easy parts and some difficult parts but with the Holy Spirit’s guidance I and you will make it through.

2. In relationship and relating to others. May our attitude be seasoned with Christ, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. How you respond speaks to who you are.

3. In our daily task, may our life become an act of holy living. Seek examples to turn even the mundane task into holy moments to help you think about others and what you do could have a lasting affect on the one who receives and or benefits from you are doing.

4. Depend on God’s direction through scripture, allowing God’s guidance to take over and direct you in who you live your life.

5. The last being personal. It doesn’t just matter what you do so that others see, it matters what you do in private. What in the private moments of your life you are focusing on. Also realizing that it is not all about you, what you want, and how you want life to happen.

With all of this before me I think it would be important to engage in this Prayer: Lord, help us to live out Colossians 3:17 in our daily lives. May my words and actions reflect Your love and grace. Guide us to do everything in Your name, giving thanks to You in all circumstances. Amen.

By incorporating this verse into our lives, we can transform ordinary moments into opportunities to glorify God. How can you apply Colossians 3:17 in your life today?
