When We Have Nothing Left

I was thinking this morning, how truly blessed I have been in my life. I have food to eat, a place to sleep, an income, I have been afforded many luxuries and privileges that others in the world have had to learn to survive without. I have most importantly the love, support, and care of Gail as the wife that I believe with all my heart God has given me. I have a family and several close friends who I believe would come to rescue if I called or asked or are there even when I don’t ask. But there is also the story of Job in the Bible who had to regroup without losing the one thing that when everything else disappears remains. That one being a loving God! The one who has promised to always, always, always, be with us.
Life has a way of stripping us down to our rawest, most vulnerable selves. There are times when we feel abandoned, broken, and utterly depleted—when it seems we have nothing left to hold on to. But even in the midst of our emptiness, there is one unshakable truth: God remains!
Isaiah 43:2 offers us a beautiful reminder of God’s unwavering presence: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.”
This verse reflects the heart of our faith. It doesn’t promise a life like many of us have gotten accustomed to, free from hardship, but it does promise that we will never face those hardships alone. When the waters rise and threaten to drown us, when the fire blazes and seems to consume everything, we hold dear, God declares, “I am with you.” In our pain and emptiness, God is not absent—God is actively present, walking beside us, comforting us, and sustaining us.
Think about those moments when you’ve felt completely drained, unable to take another step forward. Perhaps it was through loss, failure, or heartbreak. Reflect on how God carried you even when you couldn’t see or feel Him. God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is the lifeline that pulls us out of the deepest waters and the protector who shields us from consuming flames.
However, we must be willing to receive first and foremost without doubt, Jesus as Lord and Savior of our life, secondly to move to a place that God becomes our priority in everything, giving God all glory, honor, and praise. God is it, the only One who will remain amidst anything and everything. Or as Isaiah 43:11 proclaims “I, I am the Lord, and besides me there is no savior”.
As you go through today, remember that even when you feel like you have nothing left—no strength, no answers, no hope—God is enough. God must be enough in our lives. God is all-sufficient, all-knowing, and all-loving. Lean into God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, trusting that He will carry you through every storm, every fire, and every moment of need.
Prayer:
Lord, when life leaves me feeling empty and lost. Help me to remember that even when I feel like I have nothing left, You are always there. Your promises are unwavering, and Your presence is constant. Teach me to trust in You, to rely on Your strength, and to find peace in Your unfailing love. Amen
