“Eyes on Jesus When the Path is Unclear”
Pastor Calvin Cook – June 6, 2025
Scripture: “They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going…”— Acts 1:10a (NIV)
The disciples had just lived through the most chaotic and confusing season of their lives. They had seen Jesus betrayed, crucified, and buried — only to encounter Him risen and alive again.
Now in Acts 1, they stand on the Mount of Olives, listening to His final words. Their question is urgent:
“Lord, are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel now?” (v. 6)
It’s the same kind of question we ask when the road is uncertain:
Lord are you going to fix this? Whatever this is – relationship, physical, mental, financial, and so many more things that distract us. We all ask these questions in our life. Because we’re all going through something. Whether it be personal strife, financial, professional, physical, or spiritual. We are all going through something, and the next step seems to be unclear.
We ask: Lord, what’s the plan? What’s the next step? How will I get through this?
In the midst of this Jesus gives clear direction. Jesus doesn’t necessarily give a step by step plan. But He does give them a promise:
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you…”
And then He ascends, he is gone — and they’re left staring upward, caught in the tension between what was and what’s to come.
This moment teaches us:
When you don’t know what to do next — don’t stop looking to Jesus. Keep your focus!
It’s tempting in hard times to focus on what we don’t have:
• Clear direction
• Enough money
• Enough strength
• Immediate answers
But Acts 1 reminds us: when the way is tough, Jesus is still the focus. Before the mission begins, before the Spirit falls, before the Church is launched — their eyes were fixed on Him.
So, if you’re tired, confused, or standing in front of a future you can’t figure out, do what the disciples did.
Fix your eyes on Jesus. Wait. Pray. Trust the promise. The next step will come — but your focus must remain on the One who never changes.
Prayer:
Jesus,
When life feels uncertain, when I don’t know where to go or what to do, help me to keep my eyes fixed on You.
Give me the patience to wait, the courage to trust, and the faith to believe that Your Spirit will lead me in the right time.
When I’m tempted to rush ahead or give up, center me again in Your promise.
Let me walk forward with confidence — not because I know the way, but because I know the One who leads it.
In Your name,
Amen.
