What Is New Today? A Saturday Morning Devotional to Pause Us.

New Every Morning –
A Saturday morning Thought from Pastor Calvin
August 30, 2025
Scripture Focus: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” — Lamentations 3:22–23 (ESV)

This past week while on the road in the early morning for various reasons, I have been given the opportunity to see some of the most beautiful sunrises. In the darkness of this morning as I write these thoughts, I know that once again the sun will rise.

Each morning when the sun rises, we are reminded of God’s faithful promise: His steadfast love never ceases. Life brings all of us seasons of hardship, grief, or uncertainty— coupled with their best friend’s anxiety, depression, frustration, and other things which aim to separate us from God’s love.

Just as the prophet Jeremiah experienced when he wrote these words in the book of Lamentations 3:22-23. Surrounded by ruins and sorrow, Jeremiah still declared hope in God’s character: love that does not waver, mercy that does not expire, and faithfulness that does not fail.

Notice the phrase “new every morning.” God doesn’t recycle yesterday’s mercies; He provides fresh grace for each new day. Each sunrise and artistry in the sky is different. No matter what yesterday held—regrets, failures, or burdens—God’s love greets us again today, ready to renew our hearts and give us strength. His mercies are not like human resources that run out; they flow endlessly from His eternal heart.

When we wake up, we can choose to carry yesterday’s weight, or we can step into the newness God offers. Each morning is an invitation to trust His faithfulness and to walk in His unshakable love.

As I write these words I am praying for forgiveness from those, I have hurt this week. I am also seeking to embrace forgiveness from those who have hurt me. Sometimes this acceptance of forgiveness doesn’t happen because the one who did the hurting doesn’t know it and even if we share with them the hurt they have done is not received well. Why? Because they have not received God’s
convicting grace.

The second thought would be that hurting people hurt people. Part of this can be attributed to living by our own standards and opinions. So, we should pray for the one we have hurt or those who have hurt us that their own hurt is bound up and removed from the soul.

As the new day begins may we begin with a new start with the triune God as our companion into the new day. Start each day in gratitude: Before the busyness begins, thank God for His mercy and love that are fresh for you today.

Release yesterday’s burdens: Confess where you fell short and receive His forgiveness. His grace is big enough to cover your mistakes. Practice redemption!

Look for His faithfulness: Keep a journal of daily moments where you see God’s steadfast love at work—in provision, in kindness, in answered prayer, or even in quiet peace.

Prayer : Heavenly Father, thank You for Your steadfast love that never ceases and for mercies that are new every morning. Help me not to dwell on yesterday’s failures, but to walk today in the freshness of Your grace. Teach me to see Your faithfulness in every season of life. Great is Your faithfulness, O Lord. Amen.

thank you, Calvin, for this morning’s devotional.

I especially like your words that “God doesn’t recycle yesterday’s mercies.”

also…it is so true that “hurting people hurt people.”

much to think about snd a great way to begin this new day in the light of His glory and grace.

    your brother in Jesus,

    Jon
