Following Jesus From the Edges
LEFT BEHIND

Scripture Focus: Acts 1:9–14; Acts 2:1–4
“Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet… and when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying… These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication…” – Acts 1:12–14
When Jesus ascended into heaven, He didn’t simply leave His followers standing there looking upward. He left them with a promise. He left them with purpose. He called them to prepare for something greater than they had ever experienced before.
Jesus told them:
“Wait for the promise of the Father… You shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” – Acts 1:4–5
So they waited.
Roughly 120 believers gathered in that Upper Room with hearts fixed upon Jesus and expectation burning within them. But Scripture also reminds us that after the resurrection Jesus appeared to more than 500 people (1 Corinthians 15:6). That means many saw the risen Christ with their own eyes… yet only a fraction gathered to wait upon the promise.
Why?
Some were likely distracted. Some uncertain. Some too busy returning to ordinary life. Some may have believed in Jesus, yet failed to prioritize His instruction.
And because of that—they missed the moment.
Not because God rejected them. Not because grace was withheld from them. They simply chose not to wait. Chose not to prepare. Chose not to make room for what God was about to pour out.
The days between Ascension and Pentecost were not empty days. They were preparation days. Prayer days. Surrender days. The Upper Room became a place where faithful people positioned themselves for the next move of God.
The same remains true today.
Sometimes being “left behind” has less to do with heaven and more to do with missing what God desires to do in us right now. We can become so consumed with schedules, worries, entertainment, routines, disappointments, and distractions that we fail to notice the Spirit calling us deeper.
We are not forced away from Jesus. More often, we slowly drift because we stop showing up. We stop praying. We stop waiting. We stop expecting.
Yet the Holy Spirit is still searching for hungry hearts.
God is still looking for people willing to pause long enough to hear His voice… people willing to wait in faith even when they do not fully understand what is coming next.
I keep reflecting on something the Holy Spirit impressed upon my heart months ago:
“You cannot experience Revelation without Activation and Demonstration.”
The disciples received revelation from Jesus. Then they activated their faith through obedience and waiting. Finally, they demonstrated the power of God when the Spirit was poured out upon them.
“And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind…” – Acts 2:2
They waited… and they received.
But many others who heard Jesus, saw His miracles, and even witnessed the scars in His hands missed the moment because they chose not to remain near Him.
May that not be said of us.
Ascension Day this year falls on May 14, 2026. Perhaps this season is an invitation for us to prepare our hearts again—to pray again, hunger again, wait again, and position ourselves for the fresh movement of God.
Do not allow comfort, distraction, or delay to keep you from the Upper Room moments of life.
Do not be left behind.
Prayer
Lord, keep my heart awake to Your presence. Forgive me for the moments I become distracted, rushed, or spiritually comfortable. Teach me to wait faithfully, pray expectantly, and prioritize You above everything else. Draw me deeper into Your Spirit and prepare me for whatever You desire to do in my life. May I never miss Your movement because I failed to make room for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
