Scripture Focus: Acts 3:1-10

“Then Peter said, ‘Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.’” — Acts 3:6

The story of the lame man at the temple gate called Beautiful is one of the most familiar miracles in the book of Acts. It is a story that we have sung about and told stories and used in sermon illustrations probably since the day it happened.

Day after day this man lame since birth was carried to the gate to beg from those entering the temple. He had a need, and in his mind he knew exactly what would solve it. He wanted money. He wanted enough resources to make it through another day.

As Peter and John approached, he expected to receive a few coins. Instead, he received something entirely different. Peter looked directly at him and said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you.” Then, in the name of Jesus, Peter commanded him to walk. Instantly, the man was healed. The one who expected a handful of coins received strength in his legs, freedom from years of suffering, and a life forever changed by the power of God.

How often are we like that lame man?

We come before God asking for what we think we need. We pray for specific outcomes, certain answers, particular blessings, and our own carefully designed solutions. Yet God often sees a deeper need than the one we bring before Him.

The man wanted provision for a day. God wanted transformation for a lifetime.

The man wanted what he desired. God gave what He knew was best.

Sometimes God’s answer to our prayers is not the thing we asked for but the thing we truly need. His desires for us are greater than our desires for ourselves. His plans reach beyond our immediate circumstances and into His eternal purposes.

Receiving from God requires trust. It means believing that His wisdom is greater than ours and that His gifts, even when unexpected, are always good.

Today, consider this question: Are you seeking only what you want from God, or are you willing to receive what God desires to give you?

The lame man received far more than he expected. Perhaps God has something greater for you as well.

Now for us who are called to respond. We think many times when asked to do or for something that we have nothing to give. The truth of the matter is this: If we have and proclaim Jesus then we have the gift that Jesus gave us, the gift of salvation and of grace to offer another. Instead of trying to give and meet physical needs why can’t we just point others to Jesus and help in their journey and allow God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit to do the rest.

Prayer-  Lord, help me trust Your wisdom above my own desires. Give me a heart that is willing to receive what You know is best rather than wanting and clinging to what I think I need. Open my eyes to Your greater purposes.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
