The Nagging of Necessary Change – Following Jesus from the Edges.

The Nagging of Necessary Change

Scripture: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” — Romans 12:2

There are seasons when something simply won’t leave us alone.

I’m thinking this morning of the difference between nudges and nagging. The nagging that keeps returning in our prayers. It interrupts our thoughts at various points of the day. I’m not thinking of things I need to do that are needing crossed off the to do list, I am thinking of that constant urging of the Holy Spirit, calling us to something different, the gift we have been given that needs to be used, the way that we are called to follow after.

I have come to believe that some of those persistent thoughts are not meant to be ignored. They are the Holy Spirit lovingly refusing to let us become comfortable where God is calling us to move.

Necessary change is rarely easy. It asks us to leave familiar ground, challenge accepted patterns, speak truth with grace, and trust God before we can see the outcome. Two instances from scripture that I am reminded of this morning.  Noah built an ark before the rain or anyone knew what rain was.  Peter stepped out of the boat before he knew what it would feel like to walk on water. Each of them discovered that God’s direction often comes before God’s explanation.

The Apostle Paul spoke of a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). We do not know exactly what that thorn was, but we know it continually reminded him of his dependence on God. Our modern-day thorn may not be physical. It may be the growing burden over a family situation and something that we need to do for unity and to bring our family back to the place it needs to be.  It could be that new ministry we are being called to. Maybe helping heal the division we feel in our community,  in our church, in our place of work. Maybe it is being aware of the spiritual battle another is facing and seeking God with them in prayer. It might just be choosing to be a living example of Jesus. What if the very thing that keeps burdening your heart is the place where God is inviting you to trust Him most?

The Holy Spirit does not nag to condemn us. But is convicting us that will lead to transformation.

There comes a moment when we must decide whether we will continue living comfortably with what we know is wrong or courageously follow where Christ is leading. Standing for what is right may cost us popularity, security, or even relationships. Yet throughout Scripture, God has always honored those who chose faithfulness over convenience.

I am convinced that many of the greatest movements of God did not begin with crowds. They began with one person who finally said, “Lord, I will obey.”

If the Holy Spirit has been persistently speaking to your heart, do not silence His voice. Lean into it. Pray over it. Test it against Scripture. Seek wise counsel. Then step forward in faith, believing that the God who calls you is also the God who makes a way.

The nagging may not be an interruption. It may be the beginning of God’s next chapter in your life.

These thoughts this morning are the best way for me to describe what I believe it means to Follow Jesus from the Edges.

Prayer

Lord, give me ears to hear the gentle prompting of Your Holy Spirit. Keep me from settling for comfort when You are calling me to obedience. Give me courage to stand for what is right, wisdom to discern Your voice, and faith to believe that where You lead, You will provide a way. Transform my heart so that I may faithfully follow Jesus wherever He calls. Amen.
