Walking with Jesus to Church

Sunday Morning Devotional – July 12, 2026

Scripture: “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.” — Psalm 122:1

There is something different about Sunday morning.

The routine may look familiar. The alarm sounds. Coffee brews. Clothes are pressed. Bibles are gathered. We get in the car and head toward church. Yet, if we pause for just a moment, we realize we are not simply going to a building we call a church. We are walking with Jesus to be present—to be present with God and to be present with His people—with the common purpose of worshiping Him.

That changes everything.

My memories drift back to the home outside the town of Dawson where I grew up. The house where I was raised literally stood in the shadow of a church. We could see it from our front yard. One of my most vivid memories is watching people walk to church. I made that walk many times myself—sometimes alone, sometimes with my sister, sometimes with my aunt or a cousin, and sometimes with the neighbor lady.

That walk to church was sacred.

There is still something that stirs my soul whenever I see people, whether on a quiet country road or in the middle of a busy city, walking to church. There is something holy about that journey. It is a quiet testimony to everyone who sees it that someone has chosen to set aside time to worship God.

Too often we think of church as a destination instead of a journey. We judge the morning by the sermon, the music, or whether we recognize everyone in the sanctuary. But what if our worship actually began before we ever opened the church doors?

What if every step from our home to the sanctuary became an act of worship?

Imagine Jesus walking beside you this morning. What would your conversation sound like? Would you spend the journey—whether by foot, bicycle, or car—worrying about the week ahead, replaying yesterday’s frustrations, or critiquing what you expect to happen? Or would you simply thank Him for another opportunity to gather with His people?

Perhaps He would gently remind us that we are not going to church primarily to receive something. We are going to offer ourselves.

We come to worship God.

We come to encourage one another.

We come to pray for those carrying heavy burdens.

We come to hear God’s Word with open hearts.

We come because Christ is present whenever His people gather in His name.

As we walk through the church doors, may we remember that Jesus arrived before we did. He is already at work in the smiles that welcome us, in the hymns that are sung, in the prayers that are whispered, in the Scriptures that are read, and in the quiet moments when the Holy Spirit speaks to our hearts.

Walking with Jesus to church also means leaving differently than we arrived. Worship is never meant to end with the benediction. The One who walked beside us on the way to church walks with us back into our homes, our workplaces, our neighborhoods, and our ordinary lives.

For the person who has been thinking about returning to church—or perhaps the one who is considering entering a church for the very first time—lay your excuses aside. Don’t worry about who is there. Don’t dwell on what you think people may be thinking about you. Come because you need God. Come because Jesus is calling you. Come because there is a place for you in His family.

So this morning, don’t just go to church.

Walk with Jesus to church.

And when the service is over, keep walking with Him.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for inviting us to worship with Your people. Prepare our hearts before we ever enter the sanctuary. Help us to worship You with sincerity, listen to Your voice with humility, and leave ready to live as Your disciples. May every step we take today remind us that You are walking with us. In Your holy name, Amen.
