Walking with Jesus Together

Scripture: “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.” — 1 John 1:7 (KJV)
I think one of the unfortunate attributes that has taken over—especially in the last few years—is that our walk with Jesus has become a solitary journey. We have become so accustomed (I know I originally wrote habitized—which isn’t really a word, but it worked for me!) to doing life alone that it often seems easier to remain isolated, connect only to an online devotional, or, sadly, do nothing at all.
With the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, I fear this tendency could become even more pronounced.
One of the greatest misconceptions of the Christian life is that we are supposed to walk with Jesus alone. While our relationship with Christ is deeply personal, it was never intended to be isolated.
Recently, in our children’s Bible study, we looked at Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” I was humbled—actually, I was blown away—as the children described how they were allowing God to guide them and what they believed God was calling them to do.
Then I thought about today’s Scripture. In 1 John 1:7 we are reminded that as we walk in the light where Christ Himself dwells, something remarkable happens. We not only experience fellowship with God, but we also experience genuine and authentic fellowship with one another. Our common walk with Jesus becomes the foundation of our unity, and through His saving work and the redemptive power of His death on the cross, we are continually cleansed by His grace.
Jesus called individuals, but He formed a community.
He invited Peter, Andrew, James, and John to walk with Him together. He sent the disciples out two by two. The early church devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer (Acts 2:42). From the very beginning, following Jesus was meant to be lived in relationship with God and with one another.
As I continue reflecting on what it means to walk with Jesus, I am reminded how much I need others on the journey. There are days when my faith is strong enough to encourage someone else. There are other days when I need another believer to remind me of God’s promises, pray with me, or simply walk beside me without saying much at all.
Some of life’s most meaningful moments have not been when I was alone. Whether it has been simple conversations with Gail, riding in the car talking about life, sitting in a Bible study, a small group, a Sunday School class, an accountable covenant group, or simply sharing a quiet conversation over coffee, God has often used the people beside me to reveal more of His presence.
Walking together doesn’t mean we always agree on everything or travel at the same pace. Some are just beginning their journey with Christ. Others have walked with Him for decades. Some are running with excitement, while others are limping through seasons of grief, disappointment, or uncertainty.
Yet all of us need the same Savior, and all of us benefit from companions who continually point us back to Him.
Please read that last sentence again.
The church cannot merely be a place we attend once a week. It is a family of fellow travelers. We laugh together, we weep together, we pray together, we worship together, and together we continue learning what it means to follow Jesus faithfully.
As we walk with Jesus, may we also choose to walk with one another. Encourage someone today. Pray with someone. Invite someone into the journey. You never know how God might use your presence to strengthen another believer—or how He might use theirs to strengthen you.
Walking with Jesus was never meant to be a solitary path. As we walk in His light, we discover that we are also walking with one another, bound together by His love, sustained by His grace, and continually cleansed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
