Walking with Jesus by Stepping in His Footprints

Scripture:
“Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.” — 1 John 2:6
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” — John 14:6
The Bible never tells us that Jesus walked through snow, but this morning my mind went back to childhood winters after a heavy snowfall. When the snow was deep, I would try to walk behind someone who was taller, stronger, or simply had bigger feet than I did. Instead of making my own path, I would carefully place each foot into the footprints they had already made.
Sometimes the person in front would even shuffle their feet a little, packing the snow down to make the journey easier for those who followed behind.
This morning, this recollection as become a beautiful picture in my mind of what it means when we follow Jesus.
Jesus has already walked the path before us. He has already faced temptation (Hebrews 4:15). He has already endured suffering. He has already overcome sin, death, and the grave. He has already gone before us, making a way where there seemed to be no way.
Our calling is not to create our own path. It is to place our feet where His have already been and to avoid the places that Jesus would not go.
It means learning to forgive because He forgave. Loving because He loved. Serving because He served. Trusting the Father because He trusted the Father. Even when the path leads through hardship or uncertainty, we keep stepping into His footprints because we know where they lead.
Jesus did not simply come to show us a better way of living. He declared, “I am the way” (John 14:6). Every other path eventually leaves us wandering in deeper in the snow, exhausted from trying to make our own trail. But when we walk with Jesus, we discover that He has already prepared the way before us.
Psalm 119:105 reminds us, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” His Word illuminates the next footprint. His Holy Spirit gives us the strength to take the next step. His grace picks us up when we stumble. His mercy welcomes us back when we drift from the path.
Walking with Jesus does not mean life will always be easy. Deep snow is still deep snow. There are storms, hills to climb, and difficult days. Yet there is great comfort in knowing that we are not the first to travel this road. The Savior has already been there, and His footprints lead safely home.
Today, instead of trying to make your own way, slow down long enough to look for His footprints. Listen to His voice through Scripture. Follow His example. Allow the Holy Spirit guidance to lead the way. But keep placing one foot after another where He has already walked.
You will discover that the safest place you can ever be is walking in the footsteps of Jesus.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for going before me and making a way. Help me to stop trying to create my own path and instead walk faithfully in Your footsteps. Give me the wisdom to hear Your voice, the courage to trust Your leading, and the perseverance to keep following You, one step at a time. May my life reflect Yours, until the day You lead me safely home. Amen.
