The Insignificant – Does it Matter?

Psalm 122:1 reads, “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go into the house of the LORD.’”
It is Sunday morning, the house is completely quiet, there is not even the usual sound of traffic on the street in front of the house. The storms of the night have passed, and it is just a great time to sit in the presence of the Lord and prepare my heart for worship, preaching, praying, offering and receiving on this Lord’s day. Preparing for worship whether it be in a grand sanctuary, in a small country church, under a tree, in the heat of the sun or the cool of an evening vesper service, preparing for worship has always been an essentially guarded part of my life, it is the air that fills my lung. I take worship very seriously, regardless if it is with a congregation, a small group in an intimate way, or alone every morning. Some days it looks awesome and full, other days it feels intimate and alone.
My feelings on worship and corporate worship have not always been for me what it is today. I often viewed worship as habit, as something we do to impress others to entertain or be entertained. Something that only the proud and religious do. Sometimes I still feel that way and seek forgiveness if I have made worship into something about me or the church and not about honoring and glorifying God and drawing closer to God.
I want to relate to you a recent conversation I had, and this has been on my mind lately. I recently had a lady who had faced quite a bit of trouble in her life and had followed the wrong path a few times share how something – brought her to the local church. We know what brought her – the Holy Spirit.
The women shared how she entered the worship service after it had started because she wanted to remain unnoticed. But a sweet older woman across the sanctuary noticed her and got up from her seat and sat down next to her. The visitor woman shared how the older woman introduced herself, welcomed her and said she was glad she was there. With tears in her eyes, she shared “I have never been welcomed anywhere, and no one ever told me they were glad I was there.”
My new friend continued that the next morning, she found herself sitting at her new friends kitchen table having tea and toast. And that continued every week while this Saint taught her about Jesus, following Jesus and being the person God created her to be. Their relationship continues, but now the visitor lady visits the older saintly woman in the nursing home every week as they continue to talk about Jesus.
She then confessed “That women saved my life. Well actually Jesus working in her saved my life.”. This young woman is now an active part of the community of faith, actively engaged in Bible study, and serves in poverty ministries and nursing home care while still living in poverty herself. All of this because someone said you have value, I’m glad you are here, and God loves you.
I thought about this last night – in our Saturday night worship service. This week we are focusing in our preaching in a couple different areas but my mind drifted back to the story this new sister in the faith shared with me, in my preaching text from Jude this week and Philemon next week both one-chapter books in the Bible, to hearing the Holy Spirit speak “Allow the insignificant to become the significant.”
I woke up this morning at my usual 5:00AM and the words so very true.
This morning – worship may seem insignificant to you because we are caught up in so much. Especially we place so much in place that is seemingly good in the place of worship the vessel in which we drawer nearer to God.
Also please know this – you are not insignificant, you are not a mistake, you are not invaluable. You have a loving God who is desiring to be your God, to love you, save you from yourself, protect you from the evil one, walk with you even carry you. So don’t allow the excuses to keep you from worship. Get up and go to worship and worship like you are the only one in the room. You need this and the church and community of faith need this.
